Question 3:

When is a good time to introduce a pillow to one's toddler's bed?

Thank you for your question from the e-Parenting Network!

To answer your question, the basic recommendation has been no soft bedding i.e., pillows under 12 months to protect against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) primarily. Although the main indicator, instead of age, should be appropriate neck and head muscle control to ensure that the child can lift their head and will not become suffocated. This would especially be a better indicator for developmentally delayed children.

From a developmental stand point, parents who would like their toddler to use a pillow should choose wisely and select a pillow that provides appropriate support. For example, over stuffed pillows can actually place some back pressure resulting from improper sleeping posture. Most would recommend a firm and somewhat flat pillow, and on the other hand some have indicated that there are actually no true benefits to pillows. So it becomes subjective decision.
